Low Carb Cheesecake

With the decision to cut carbs to lose weight, do you feel as though you're making too much of a sacrifice. Well, you'll be glad to know that with all of the innovative ways to remake normally high carbohydrate dishes, you won't have to give up what you crave.

Those who practice the Atkins diet know you don't have to give up desserts. Imagine eating a low carb cheesecake that helps you lose the weight. When you discover how easy it is to make, you'll definitely be tempted.

What's In It

It's the crust that makes the usual version of this decadent dessert high in carbohydrates. Graham crackers and sugar are usually used to make the crust. If you use a sugar substitute with crushed nuts, instead, the amount of carbs go down significantly. Of course, it will taste slightly different than what you're used to, but once you understand how many carbs you are knocking off you'll see it’s worth it.

Eggs and cheese have very few carbs. Which is why people following this lifestyle often have scrambled eggs or cheese omelets for breakfast. They are also the two main ingredients in low carb cheesecake filling. After heavy cream and some sugar substitute, you need only to add some flavoring. Vanilla or almond extract will do just fine. A sprinkle of lemon juice also adds something to the flavor.

Top It Off

Topping can also be used to add flavor to this treat. Try toasting some of your favorite nuts in the oven for several minutes. Chopped almonds, peanuts or my favorite, walnuts, all do the job well for this. When you've removed them from the oven and have let them cool, you can add them as topping to your low carb cheesecake. If it's the traditional fruit topping you prefer, small amounts of berries can be used as well. Use fresh or unsweetened frozen berries. Don't add additional sugar to them if you are counting your carbs.

You can even omit the crust if you want to eat something with even fewer carbs. When you do it this way be sure and grease the pan well with butter. Like all desserts of this type, a low carb cheesecake should bake in a medium oven for at least an hour. When it’s done it'll last for a week in the fridge.

Is It Right For You?

It’s also important to note that many foods used on diets like Atkins and South Beach are higher in fat. If someone's been told to eat foods lower in fat because of health related issues, a low carb cheesecake may not be a good choice.
